History is a very worthy and meaningful life phenomenon. It tell us what had actually happened in the real world. It also teaches us a great deal of experience, knowledge, facts, and wisdom, which are philosophically and culturally very important and strategic to arrange a better life in the next following time.
The emergence of Nahdlatul Ulama (the Renaissance of Ulama) as a historical phenomenon is an inseparable variance of the Indonesian history in general at least because of three reason. First, at the political level, the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), which was established in 1962, especially in its early development, was oriented toward developing political awareness of the Muslim community in Indonesia for fighting against colonialism. Second, at the philosophical or doctrinal level, the NU as socio- religious institution based on ahlusunnah wal jamaah school of thought (mahzab) has strongly succeeded in conserving and developing major part of Islamic traditionalism which are predominantly referred to as the principles of the ahlusunnah wal jamaah school of thought in Indonesia. Third, at the cultural level, NU as a social organization- which is in line with ist religious mission- is also successful in establishing thousand  of religious- educational institutions, especially the pesantrens, which until now have been growing in Indonesia.
